Macao Restaurant, located on Kindaruma Rd in Nairobi, Kenya, has garnered a solid reputation for its authentic Hong Kong Cantonese dim sum. Customers repeatedly hail it as Nairobi's premier destination for dim sum, with many praising the generous menu that features both savory and sweet options. The restaurant recently relocated to a larger venue at the Eastland Hotel, enhancing the dining experience with multiple private dining rooms and an inviting terrace.
While the ambiance and quality of food remain highlights, some patrons point out areas for improvement, particularly in service speed and menu accessibility. The unique ordering system via WeChat has faced criticism for being cumbersome, especially for non-Chinese speakers. Moreover, the restaurant does not accept credit cards, which could deter some visitors.
Overall, Macao Restaurant is adored for its culinary magic, especially the dumplings, which feel authentic and satisfying. Despite a few operational hiccups, the restaurant's commitment to excellent flavor and an expanding menu keeps it on the must-visit list for those craving a taste of Chinese cuisine in Nairobi. A gem indeed, ideal for both dim sum enthusiasts and newcomers alike!

Reviews for Macao Restaurant
Review highlights
Based on 167 reviewsMacao Restaurant in Nairobi is widely praised for its authentic Hong Kong Cantonese dim sum, with many customers highlighting the quality and variety of dishes, especially dumplings. The restaurant's recent relocation to a larger, more elegant space with private dining options has been positively received. However, some patrons note challenges with the digital ordering system, which relies on WeChat QR codes and lacks credit card payment options, making it less accessible for non-Chinese speakers. Service is generally described as friendly and efficient, though there are calls for improvements in waiter attentiveness. Overall, Macao maintains a strong reputation as a go-to venue for dim sum enthusiasts seeking an authentic and enjoyable dining experience in Nairobi.
UPDATE - March 2025 - New location! Much bigger, much nicer, lots of private dining rooms upstairs. Same great food! New management - Dec 2020 - open again with full Covid protocols in place. Same great Hong Kong Cantonese Dim Sum. Very friendly owner. Still our favorite place for weekend Dim Sum brunch. Top floor in Junction Mall.
Moved to Eastland hotel from Junction mall. Definitely the best Chinese restaurant in Nairobi. I would give 5 if waiters improve their job. Customers need to scan barcode via WeChat to see their menu and to order. They must change the system, otherwise it’s not easy for non-Chinese. And they don’t accept credit cards.
It was my first time trying Chinese Cuisine and I must say, I wasn't disappointed. Maybe it's the hotel. That's where the magic is. I loved every bit of it, from the setup to the services. Amazing!
UPDATE 2025 - Nairobi's best dim sum restaurant is open again and in their own beautiful big location. The food is as good as it ever was and the menu is expanded. If you love dumplings, this is (again!) THE place to go. UPDATE: Feb 2024 - Macao has closed down (again!) there is a new restaurant in Eastland Hotel now, serving Nanjing Food, opening Feb 20th. We'll miss you Macao... Dim Sum in Nairobi, hard to complain. The food was pretty ok, not the best but again, Nairobi. We'll definitely come back. There is an outdoor terrace sitting ,/ smoking section, and small VIP dining rooms.
There was a variety of dimsum options both sweet and savoury. They were all very well done and felt authentic. The prices were fair and the service was fast. They should consider translating their menu to English and adding ingredients that the different dishes contain to make it more accessible. Above all it was a worthwhile experience.
Awesome customer service... Very Delicious food.. Very cool environment.
